What stores are open on Columbus Day 2011? Most retail stores like Walmart, Kmart and Target are open on Monday October 10, but there is no mail delivery and schools will be closed. All Federal buildings and municipal offices will also be closed for the holiday.

Columbus Day became a federal holiday in 1934 and is celebrated every year on the second Monday of October in the United States.

Here’s the list of what is open and closed:

Retail stores: Columbus Day is a big sale day for many retailers. Most stores are open normal business hours.

Liquor stores: Most are open, but call ahead just to be sure.

Banks: Most banks are closed with access only to ATMs and on-line banking. Banks with “in-store” branches MAY be operating on a Sunday schedule, but it’s best to call.

Mail delivery:  Columbus Day is a Federal holiday so there will be no mail delivery in the United States. All U.S. Post Offices are closed.
